My weekend

  • Write in English about why you chose to study Japanese,
  • what you are excited about, and/or what you have found challenging after the first four weeks of Japanese class.

I've always wanted to learn Japanese. I encountered short Japanese phrases very easily during my childhood since I was exposed to them quite openly as an Asian. I did try to learn how to speak the language when I was really young from my grandparents (who spoke almost native Japanese) but gave up soon after a few phone sessions because I had absolutely no motivation or interest in learning it. However in high school, after I came abroad to the States, I somewhat got obsessed with Japanese soap operas. Since then I've always wanted to learn how to write and speak it but never got the chance until now.

Now I've only learned how to read and write Hiragana, but I still think Japanese is a very cute language, in both the alphabets and the pronunciations. I have a long way to go, but I feel I'm going to have a lot of fun in the class. The hardest thing for me right now, probably because I had absolutely zero knowledge in Japanese before, is actually reading and writing the Japanese alphabets. They are doable, and are fun like solving puzzles, but they take up so much time because I'm still not yet used to them and I have to go through a lot of thought processes to translate English into Japanese or vice versa. It still takes some time for me to read the Hiragana but it feels like most of the classmates are already fluent in it and the class seems to move a little faster than I would like it to be.
